Are you team Botox or Fillers?

Are you noticing frown lines, crow’s feet, or unwanted wrinkles from the aging process appearing on your skin? There are numerous options to combat wrinkles, but it can be challenging to know where to begin, especially for longer-lasting treatments, like Botox and dermal fillers. At Lumina Aesthetics Clinic, we offer cosmetic injections to patients to help improve fine lines and facial wrinkles. WHAT IS BOTOX?

Doctors primarily use Botox to treat wrinkles. Botox is a brand name for a toxin made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and was the first drug to use an injectable botulinum toxin. Botox injections block chemical signals from nerves in a targeted area, which signals the muscles to stop contracting and relax. These injections can also be used to treat various medical conditions like chronic migraines, neck spasms, excessive sweating and so forth.

Botox can be used to:

  • Smooth crow’s feet, forehead furrows, frown lines, lip lines and bunny lines
  • Diminish neck bands
  • Improve the appearance of skin dimpling on the chin
  • Lift the corners of the mouth
  • Soften a square jawline
  • Correct a gummy smile
  • Results from Botox treatments can last between three to four months. We recommend scheduling follow-up injections to maintain your results.

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?

Like Botox, dermal fillers treat wrinkles on the face and are primarily used to treat smile lines but can also plump lips or cheeks. A dermal filler is a gel-like substance injected into the skin to restore volume, smooth lines and enhance facial features.

At Lumina Aesthetics Clinic, we use Juvederm Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that helps your cells retain moisture. HA fillers are soft and gel-like. Results of HA fillers are temporary and last approximately six to 12 months before the body absorbs them.

WHO SHOULD GET BOTOX OR DERMAL FILLERS?

You may want to consider Botox or dermal fillers if you are worried about fine lines or facial wrinkles. Many licensed medical professionals recommend receiving Botox when your face is relaxed and when visible lines or wrinkles are noticeable.

Lumina’s doctor may recommend that you are a good candidate for Botox and dermal fillers if:

  • You have moderate to severe facial wrinkles
  • Your wrinkles are located around or between the eyes, on the forehead, or around the neck
  • You are in good general health
  • You have realistic expectations for improvement

Lumina’s doctors are professionals and experienced in these cosmetic procedures to protect your health and get your desired results. Injecting Botox and fillers may look simple, but in-depth medical knowledge of how the body works is required for the procedure to be completed safely.

RISK FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH BOTOX AND FILLERS

Botox and dermal fillers are generally considered safe. However, there are some risks. Side effects and complications include:

  • Bruising and pain at the injection site
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Redness
  • Temporary facial weakness or drooping

In rare instances, the injections may spread beyond the treatment area, causing botulism-like signs and symptoms such as breathing problems, trouble swallowing, muscle weakness and slurred speech.

Additionally, with preventive Botox, you risk “frozen” facial expressions, which results from the procedure’s muscle-relaxing effects. If you don’t have any wrinkles to begin with, you might want to carefully weigh the side effects and outcomes of Botox and dermal fillers. Make sure to speak with a licensed medical professional before receiving the treatment to verify if this treatment is best for you.

WHO SHOULD NOT RECEIVE BOTOX OR DERMAL FILLERS?

Botox and dermal fillers are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, those with specific allergies or health conditions, or individuals who take certain medications. If you want to know more if Botox or dermal fillers are right for you, you should consult with a licensed medical professional.

THE PROCEDURE AT LUMINA AESTHETICS CLINIC

Your appointment can last from 10 to 30 minutes long. Your medical professional will use a thin needle to inject Botox or dermal fillers into the targeted area during this procedure. The number of injections is based on the size of the area being treated. You can go back to your daily activities after having this procedure done.

Patients are encouraged to:

  • Avoid touching the treated area
  • Not participate in vigorous exercise for 24 hours
  • Sit or stand in an upright position for at least six hours

WHICH OPTION IS BEST FOR ME?

Our staff at Lumina Aesthetics Clinic is here to help you understand which treatment will give you the results you desire. For example, if you’re looking to smooth unwanted fine lines and wrinkles in the upper part of your face, you may consider learning more about our Botox treatments. However, if you’re looking to add firmness and plumpness back into your skin, especially around the cheeks, lips and mouth, you should consider learning more about our dermal filler options.

Botox Injections can lift your jawline and transform the appearance of people with receding chins. For a more visible V-line in the face, Botox can partially relax your masseter muscles.

By reducing the size of these muscles, Botox slims the jawline. This in turn increases the visibility of the V-line in your face, making your face appear more youthful and slender, while emphasizing your cheekbones.

Slimming the jawline is a procedure most popular amongst people of Asian descent and those with wide mandibles. In addition, this procedure can relieve pain/teeth grinding (bruxism), which often results from an overload of pressure in highly developed masseters.
