PRP Therapy the Answer for Hair Loss?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy has also been shown to help treat hair loss. But have you wondered how it works and what is the benefit of PRP therapy for hairs? Let's find out!

Hair loss is a fact of life for millions of people. While it is most often associated with men, it happens to some women too. What are the causes of hair loss and how can it be treated?

The causes of hair loss

There are several reasons why a person may start losing hair, but the most common is a condition called androgenetic alopecia. This condition is associated with dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of the male hormone testosterone and its effects on the scalp. DHT binds to hair follicles and shrinks them, killing hair and retarding its growth.

What Causes Hair Loss in Men?

  • Genetics: Your family history is the biggest predictor of thinning hair, especially typical male pattern baldness. That means if other men in your family have had hair loss, you are more likely to as well.
  • Hormones: Blame it on testosterone, at least in part, because cells in the scalps of men who are genetically disposed of convert that essential male hormone into another hormone known as DHT that causes follicles to shrink and eventually stop growing hair.
  • Medical Conditions: Male pattern baldness has also been associated with medical conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, enlarged prostates, diabetes and obesity.
  • Medications: A variety of drugs are linked to hair loss including those used to treat arthritis, depression, high blood pressure, heart problems and, of course, cancer (hair that is lost during cancer treatments typically returns).
  • Stressful Events: emotional or physical stress, can trigger hair thinning.
  • Scalp Disorders: Conditions that cause hair loss in men include ringworm, a fungal infection, and folliculitis, the inflammation of hair follicles often caused by a bacterial infection. Psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp may also lead to hair thinning.

While the condition is common in men, it happens in women too. Women can also experience hair loss as a result of telogen effluvium, a condition that can develop as a result of stress or poor nutrition.

Here are some of the most common reasons for hair loss in women;

  • Childbirth: Postpartum hair loss - (luckily, it's temporary hair loss, but you should take care with the right treatment to grow your hair back soon )
  • Over-processing your hair: Getting frequent perms, chemical straightening procedures, or relaxing procedures—basically, anything that uses harsh chemicals on your scalp and hair—can damage the hair follicle and cause permanent hair loss.
  • Intense emotional or physical stress: same with the cause of hair loss in men, in women, When you're experiencing something stressful or traumatic—you may experience uncommon hair loss.

Is Hair Loss Normal?

We all lose hair. Some hair loss is perfectly normal, as hair falls out after it completes the 2 to 6-year growth phase. You may notice loose hairs that have fallen out on your clothes or in your comb or hairbrush. The average person loses about 50 to 100 hairs per day. This is normal. What is not normal? Excessive hair loss in women may be apparent by the following: If your hair starts to fall out in clumps, especially when you brush or comb it or are in the shower, If you notice that you can see larger areas of your scalp or that your hair is thinning, meet Lumina’s doctor for diagnosis and treatment of your hair loss condition.

Is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy the Answer?

This treatment is an effective way to encourage hair growth. When between 80 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women struggle with hair loss, it makes sense that these individuals are looking for a remedy that actually works. Hair loss affects the quality of life, self-esteem and may even lead to depression and other side effects, especially among women.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy is an effective treatment for a variety of chronic ailments and as an anti-ageing remedy. It has also been shown to help treat hair loss. PRP involves taking a small amount of blood from the patient and then filtering the blood to separate out the platelets.

These platelets are then injected into the scalp in a nearly painless fashion using small gauge needles.

  • Treatments vary depending on the patient’s needs.
  • Initially, our doctor may recommend injections in 6 to 8-week intervals or several treatments every month
  • Patients should begin seeing results within 5 to 6 months
  • Maintenance may involve treatments 2 to 4 times a year
  • While success rates vary depending on the patient’s condition, most report an 80% success rate when using PRP.

Is PRP therapy Helps Hair Grow?

  • The platelets increase blood supply to the hair follicle.
  • The treatment increases the thickness of each piece of hair.
  • Continual treatment helps maintain growth and thickness.
  • Platelet injections will diminish hair loss.
