How to avoid bruising after botox & dermal fillers?

Botox is a purified form of the botulinum toxin that is obtained from bacteria. Though it is deadly in larger amounts, the tiny, regulated amount of Botox given to correct wrinkles has been used safely for decades. Botox works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected. When those nerve signals are interrupted, the affected muscle is temporarily paralyzed or frozen. Without the movement of these selected muscles in the face, certain wrinkles may be softened, reduced, or even removed. Botox and other treatments made with botulinum toxin are sometimes called neurotoxins.

Botox only works on wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement. These are known as dynamic wrinkles, and are often called “expression lines.”

The most common dynamic wrinkles that Botox can treat are lines on the upper face, such as between the brows, horizontal lines on the forehead, and crow’s feet around the eyes. These lines are caused by smiling, frowning, squinting, and other facial expressions. Botox will not work on fine lines and wrinkles caused by sagging or loss of plumpness in the face. These are known as static wrinkles. Static wrinkles include lines in the cheeks, neck, and jowl areas.

Botox is not a permanent treatment. Repeated treatments are necessary for continued wrinkle-reducing effects. Most people find that the muscle-relaxing effect of Botox lasts for 3 to 4 months.

Dermal fillers, sometimes called soft tissue fillers, are substances designed to be injected beneath the surface of the skin to add volume and fullness.

What can dermal fillers correct?

Different types of dermal fillers are designed to treat varying signs of aging. Depending on the filler selected, they may:

  • plump up thinning lips
  • enhance or fill in shallow areas on the face
  • decrease or remove the shadow or wrinkle under the eyes caused by the lower eyelid
  • fill in or soften the look of recessed scars
  • fill in or soften static wrinkles, especially on the lower face

Static wrinkles include those around the mouth and along the cheeks. These wrinkles are usually a result of a loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin.

Dermal fillers are considered to be safe but side effects can occur. A licensed healthcare professional should perform all dermal filler procedures using only FDA-approved fillers injected with a syringe. The most common problems include:

  • skin rash, itching, or pimple-like eruptions
  • redness, bruising, bleeding, or swelling
  • undesirable appearance, such as asymmetry, lumps, or overcorrection of wrinkles
  • skin damage that causes a wound, infection, or scarring
  • ability to feel the filler substance under the skin
  • blindness or other vision problems
  • death of skin cells due to loss of blood flow to the area

When it comes to quick-and-easy anti-aging tools, few beat BOTOX and dermal fillers for their effectiveness and ease of use. In just a few minutes, we can treat fine lines, wrinkles, and deep folds with simple injections, and the results are immediate or show within a few days after your treatment. To ensure that the anti-aging effect isn’t offset by bruising from the injections, there are some steps you can take before and after your visit with us.

At Lumina Aesthetics, our team has extensive experience with cosmetic injectables, helping our clients turn back the clock on aging skin. While many of our clients experience no problems with bruising after their BOTOX or dermal filler injections, some have more sensitive tissue, and minor bruising can crop up.

Here are 4 tips that will help keep your skin free from bruising.

1. Stop certain medications and supplements

If you regularly take medications like aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, drugs thin your blood, which can lead to bruising. We recommend that you discontinue the use of these medications for about a week before your appointment with us and for at least a day afterward.

Please also note that certain supplements can have the same effect, such as high-dose vitamin E, ginkgo Biloba, and garlic. For the week leading up to your cosmetic injections, curb your use of these supplements to avoid bruising.

If you’re on blood thinners like warfarin for cardiovascular issues, please let us know. You should continue to take these medications per your doctor’s instructions, but do know that you may be more susceptible to bruising after your injections. Rest assured, the bruising does go away!

2. Avoid alcohol

Alcohol can influence your platelet activity, so we suggest that you don’t drink for the 24 hours preceding your visit with us. You might also avoid alcohol for the next 24 hours after your appointment just to make sure that your platelets are behaving normally.

3. Ice Cube to the rescue

Immediately after your BOTOX or filler injections, we suggest you put a cube of ice on the area, which can go a long way toward preventing bruising by constricting your blood vessels. And the icing does double duty by numbing any discomfort you may be feeling at the injection sites. You should apply cold compresses for the rest of the day after your appointment with us for the best results.

4. Elevate the area

Following your appointment, be mindful of avoiding any activity that might force blood into the areas where we’ve administered the injections. For example, you may want to skip your yoga class and the downward-facing dog and headstands for 24 hours following your injections.

Any time an injection is made under the skin, bruising is a possible side effect. That said, bruising does not always occur after Botox is administered—in fact, the majority of patients do not exhibit bruises following treatment.

So why does bruising occur for some people? Because bruising is caused when blood vessels under the skin are opened, and even a very skilled doctor can sometimes cause that to happen if they poke blood vessels with the needle they’re using for your Botox injections (the vessels are often hard to see). Using a smaller needle reduces the likelihood that this will occur, but doesn’t eliminate it altogether.

Most of the time, if you’re going to develop bruising from your Botox & dermal filler treatment it will appear within one to two days. Sometimes, however, it can take a little bit longer for the bruise to migrate to the skin’s surface—more like three days. This is not as common as the immediate bruising, but it does occasionally happen (and if it happens to you, there’s nothing to worry about).

As we mentioned earlier, some bruising is always a risk when it comes to injectable treatments. Luckily, though, it’s more likely that you won’t develop bruises after Botox and dermal fillers than it is that you will—and if you do, the bruising will resolve itself within days, while the Botox will last for months.

Botox and dermal fillers are the most popular cosmetic treatment on the market because of their reliable results. However, what you do right after your Botox and dermal fillers treatment can hurt its effectiveness. That’s why it’s important you should avoid these activities after your Botox  appointment:

1. Rubbing Your Face

The injection site should heal very quickly. However, rubbing the area where Botox was injected can irritate it, prolonging redness and even causing bruising.

2. Lying On Your Face

Don’t take a nap right after your appointment. Avoid lying on your face for at least four hours after your injections.

3. Skip Washing Your Face

Washing your face or applying moisturizer is important for skin health. However, you should avoid washing or applying lotion for at least six hours after treatment to allow the medicine to settle in.

4. Avoid Heat and Sun

Heat and sun can inflame your skin, causing prolonged redness and swelling. Avoid heat lamps, tanning beds, and the sun itself for at least 24 hours after your injection. When you do go outside, wear a hat and/or sunscreen to protect your skin.
