The Top 6 treatments for ACNE

Acne is ranked as the third most pervasive skin condition in most countries and the most common conditions we see at Lumina Aesthetics Clinic. This article will talk about the top six acne treatments where we have seen the most promising results. Let’s get started!

Acne treatment should be a top priority for anyone who suffers from acne-prone skin. Without help from skincare treatments, mild acne can get worse over time and leave permanent scarring, which can have psychological and emotional implications. It’s important to emphasize that because there are many different types of acne there is no one-size-fits-all remedy that will work for everyone. This is why Lumina's Team believe a combination of treatments is the best strategy.

Fortunately, there are now advanced and highly effective acne treatment plans offered by Lumina Aesthetics.

1.Extraction and Drainage

For large and painful cystic acne, our team may perform an extraction and drainage procedure. This is normally done on acne cysts that did not respond to medication. Doing so can potentially dial down the pain and the risks of your acne to cause permanent scarring. For urgent extraction, Lumina’s doctor may inject the cyst with a medication.

2. Chemical Peel

Chemical peels might mildly improve the appearance of skin for people with mild acne. This procedure has traditionally been used to lessen the appearance of fine lines, sun damage and minor facial scars.

Chemical peels that Lumina's doctor use aren't available over-the-counter. During a chemical peel, Lumina's doctor applies a mild chemical solution to your skin. This solution helps unclog pores and remove dead skin cells, whiteheads and blackheads. A chemical peel can also generate new skin growth. You'll likely need multiple treatments for best results, which are not long-lasting.

Possible side effects include redness, scabbing, swelling, scaling, crusting and changes in skin colour. Talk with Lumina's doctor about the risks of chemical peels, especially if you:

  • Have skin that tends to form exaggerated scar tissue (keloids)
  • Have used the oral acne medication isotretinoin
  • Are pregnant
  • Have frequent or severe outbreaks of cold sores

3. LED / PDT

The redness and swelling that can occur with acne are caused by bacteria that can be killed by exposing your skin to different types of light. Before the procedure, your doctor might apply a medication to your skin to make it more sensitive to light (photosensitizers). You might need to visit your doctor for multiple treatments.

Your treatments may use blue light, red light or a combination. More study is needed to determine the best methods for treating acne with light.

Acne bacteria can also be killed with pulsed light and heat energy. These treatments may also shrink oil (sebaceous) glands, which decreases oil production.

Possible light therapy side effects in the treated areas include:

  • Redness
  • Crusting and peeling
  • Changes in skin tone
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Pain

4. Lumina’s Diamond Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion can be helpful to encourage skin turnover and decongest pores and small comedones — all of which speed up the acne healing process while warding off future breakouts. Diamond microdermabrasion is an abrasive skin rejuvenation treatment involving the use of a special diamond-tipped wand to slough away the top level of the skin. As the dirt and dead skin cells are removed the wand’s vacuum will suck it all up leaving the skin clear off of harmful particles.

Due to the precise nature of the diamond-tipped wand, this treatment can more accurately exfoliate hard-to-reach places, such as areas closer to the eyes and mouth (and there is no risk of stray particles getting in your eye or being ingested through your nose or mouth). Rather than placing the results in the hands of a machine, the diamond Microderm relies on the skill of the operator to apply manual pressure, giving our skilled technician much more direct control over the entire process.

5. PRP

Lumina’s Dermapen Microneedling is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure known as collagen induction therapy or percutaneous collagen induction. When derma pen micro-needling is combined with platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) therapy, it greatly improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, and hyperpigmentation. Most patients are good candidates for this procedure and can greatly benefit.

PRP injections are an efficient way of treating the side effects experienced by acne sufferers. Blood is drawn from a patient’s arm and then placed in a centrifuge that removes white and red blood cells, leaving only the platelet-rich plasma full of active growth factors. The platelets found in our blood do a multitude of beneficial functions, such as stimulating collagen and elastin's regrowth, essentials for healthy skin. The fact that platelet-rich plasma is derived from your blood supply minimizes any kind of risk of side effects or rejection from your body. PRP is a natural treatment that doesn’t require artificial fillers or chemicals. The platelet-rich plasma is injected into sites of the face that have sustained damage from acne. It will stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin, helping to reduce the appearance of scars, leaving you with permanently brighter and smoother skin. In addition, PRP can also prevent fresh breakouts, due to the therapy helping to stimulate the flow of blood and oxygen in the body which work to remove the build-up of toxins.

6. RF Microneedling

RF MicroNeedling is usually one step in a multi-therapy acne scar treatment plan. For patients with deeply sunken-in scars (Boxcar and Ice Pick scar types), the elevation of these deep scars usually occurs prior to RF MicroNeedling, which will help to put the finishing touches on skin texture and smoothness. Pigmented scars are also typically treated with laser therapy prior to RF MicroNeedling.
