Dermal Fillers: It Can Improve Your Face

Dermal fillers treatment is a cosmetic dermatological procedure that is used to minimize the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles to restore a youthful look. It is a great treatment option for those who want to eliminate the signs of aging but are not willing to undergo invasive treatments such as a traditional facelift. It works by filling up areas of the face that are prone to sagging to bring back its natural volume and fullness. Although it does not bring permanent results, it offers a simpler, safer, and cheaper way to look younger.

A dermal filler treatment is most beneficial for patients who have the following signs of skin aging:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Pitted scars
  • Furrowed skin

On the other hand, filler treatment is not safe for those who Are taking blood-thinning medication, including aspirin, vitamin E, or any type of NSAID, have herpes simplex or herpes zoster.

Filler treatment sessions may cause some symptoms right after each procedure. The following symptoms are normal and temporary, typically lasting up to 3 days after the procedure:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Itching

If symptoms do not go away after 3 days or they seem to be getting worse, it is best to go back to the doctors who performed the procedure. Prolonged symptoms may be signs of possible complications linked to dermal fillers, which include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Allergic reactions, the most common of which include rashes, hives, and swelling
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Granulomas or nodules, which are lumps that develop under the skin in the treatment area

Fillers may have a similar result to neurotoxin injections, more commonly known as the brand name Botox, by giving you a more youthful appearance, but they work much differently. Botox works by paralyzing the muscle underneath your skin. It’s hard to know how each person’s body will react to Botox, and how stiff the facial expressions might be afterward. Botox also takes days or weeks to settle, so the results aren’t immediately apparent. Results last 3 to 4 months.

With fillers, the material is injected underneath your skin. Depending on the type, this material might serve several purposes, but all fillers have the same aim: restoring lost volume to make skin look smoother, plumper, and more structured.

You can usually tell how fillers are working in the hours after treatment. Their results tend to last longer than Botox — anywhere from 6 to 12 months.

PREPARING FOR DERMAL FILLERS

Consultation with our doctor at Lumina Aesthetics Clinic is essential before undergoing a dermal filler treatment. It’s also important for patients to discontinue blood-thinning products like aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs include Advil and Aleve), and vitamin E supplements.

In addition, patients should eat leafy greens, follow a low sodium diet, and avoid strenuous exercise several days before and after their injections.

TREATMENT PROCESS

Depending on the areas being injected, treatment time is approximately 10-25 minutes.

Lumina’s Nurse may apply a topical anesthetic beforehand, so you will feel more comfortable and reduce the pain.

RECOVERY

Immediately after receiving dermal fillers, patients may experience redness, swelling, bruising, and lumps at or near the injection site. These effects often subside within two to four weeks.

Patients should also avoid contact sports and strenuous exercise, massage the area and sleep on their backs for a few days post-treatment to minimize swelling and bruising.

Dermal filler injections are currently one of the most popular treatments in the field of medical aesthetics – and for good reason. The injections require no recovery time and provide immediate results! Medical grade filler injections typically consist of hyaluronic acid, which occurs in the skin naturally. The injections restore collagen that is lost with age, creating an effect that fills in wrinkles & plumps volume in desired areas. Where could your face benefit from filler injections?

Check out this list of 6 common areas where fillers can be used!

Volumize Lips

Plumping the lips might be today’s most well-known use for dermal fillers, thanks to certain celebrities (who may or may not be over plump!). Despite a frequent association with overfilling, lip filler treatments can be easily customized to achieve a subtle enhancement to the natural shape of the lips & to even out the texture by filling in lines & creating symmetry.

Plump Cheeks

The cheeks are an area that tends to experience volume loss with age, especially for runners & those who participate in the high-impact exercise. Expertly injected fillers can restore volume & the youthful appearance to the cheeks without the “face freezing” effects that can be associated with Botox. This creates an overall energized & younger-looking face without the traditional facelift surgery, which is invasive & requires a significant recovery period.

Fill in Forehead Lines

Unlike Botox, which temporarily paralyzes muscles to eliminate the movement causing certain wrinkles, fillers reduce the appearance of static lines visible even when the face is at rest. The injections do this by literally filling in the lines with hyaluronic acid, an already naturally occurring component of the skin.

Reshape the Chin or Nose

Dermal filler injections are commonly used as a non-surgical option to reshape areas such as the chin, jawline, or nose. This can improve a patient’s side profile & reduce the appearance of a sagging neck. Thanks to this, fillers have eliminated the need for surgical procedures to fix these common complaints.

Eliminate Marionette Lines & Nasolabial Folds

Marionette lines are those lines below each corner of the mouth that can significantly add age to one face, and as you probably already guessed, resemble those of a marionette doll. Fillers can very easily fill in that lost volume in these lines to instantly take years off a face and restore balance with the rest of the face. Often referred to as smile lines, nasolabial folds are the lines seen from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. This area is easily corrected with filler to create a softer, youthful yet natural look to the face.

Reduce Appearance of Scars

Scars can create indents & uneven texture and are especially unwanted on any area of the face. Even if they are barely noticeable to others, facial scars are common insecurity for people who have them. Fortunately, dermal fillers can be used to lessen the appearance of scars & even out the surrounding texture. Eliminating scars as well as the other common uses of dermal fillers allow for a subtle & nonsurgical solution to facial imperfections, oftentimes leading to an overall increase in self-confidence in the patients electing for this procedure!
