Botox and Fillers, What’s the difference?

Injectible Filler treatment at Lumina Aesthetics

If you’re new to injectables, you may wonder about the difference between Botox and fillers. You may also wonder which treatment can help you achieve your anti-ageing goals. Botox and fillers both have their own unique advantages and can also be used together to reverse the signs of ageing.

Although the words Botox and fillers get used interchangeably sometimes, they are actually quite different. Botox treats fine lines and wrinkles by preventing muscle contraction while fillers which are made from Hyaluronic Acid which help to add volume to the face, which we lose as we age.

Botox is usually injected to treat the dynamic wrinkles that occur when you make facial expressions.

It offers natural looking wrinkle reduction by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles. Designed to remove and reduce wrinkles, Botox treatments work by blocking the nerve signals to your facial muscles. Quick and painless, Botox reduces your facial muscle activity and temporarily prevents the contraction of muscles that cause laugh lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

Botox treatments consist of a few tiny injections, with very localized effects that will not impact your ability to smile, laugh, or show expression. Effective for a wide range of people, Botox improves the appearance of moderate to severe lines between the eyebrows and can be injected around the eye area to improve the appearance of crow’s feet.

With minimal discomfort and no downtime, Botox fits in to your lifestyle and schedule. Most people see visible results in 10 days to 2 weeks, and results last about 6 months.

Dermal fillers restore facial volume loss, effectively smoothing lines and wrinkles, restoring your cheek and lip volume, and refreshing your appearance. Adding volume without surgery, injectable gel fillers treat static lines that are visible when your face is at rest. From plumping the lips to lifting your cheeks, fillers add volume, encourage natural collagen production, and prevent the skin from sagging.

Formulated with hyaluronic acid, fillers are injected into the skin with a very fine needle to fill in facial wrinkles and indentations to restore a smoother appearance, or into the lips to add fullness and volume to your smile. Very effective at reducing the early signs of aging, fillers are mostly used on the middle and lower facial areas.

Fillers provide visible results you can see immediately and instantly, with effects lasting for 6 months to 1 year. In the cheek area, fillers last up to 1 year. For facial lines and wrinkles, results last 9 to 12 months. Lip fillers typically last 6 months to 9 months.

Dermal fillers like Juvederm, teosyal and restylane are used for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds like the nasolabial folds. Also, while Botox lasts 3 to 4 months, fillers can last anywhere between 9 to 12 months. Always make sure the ingredients of filler is hyaluronic acid and the filler brands are already FDA Approved. If you’re looking for a non-invasive way to treat dynamic and static wrinkles, getting Botox and fillers at the same time is a great idea. This combination treatment can completely rejuvenate your face and restore a youthful, beautiful face. During a consultation, our doctor will inform you whether you can benefit from both or one of these treatments.

For anti-ageing purposes specifically, doctors use Botox to treat two types of wrinkles: static and dynamic. Static lines are the deep wrinkles that are etched into people's faces after several decades of frowning, smiling, and raising their eyebrows, while dynamic wrinkles are only visible as you're making a facial expression.

Many people fear that their faces will become dramatically wrinkled when they stop Botox. If you choose not to continue…those muscles staying out of use while Botox is active can delay the ageing process; it reduces movement when injected, slowing the formation of wrinkles.

In other words, your skin won't develop lines overnight to make up for lost time—you'll still enjoy looking years younger relative to your age, depending on how long you kept a Botox regimen.

At what age should you start using Botox?

You can start Botox as early as 18 years old but you probably don’t need to. At Health & Aesthetics we assess each patient individually and will recommend the best treatment for you. For some people, this may mean starting Botox treatment as soon as your early 20s, if you’re prone to wrinkles and want to prevent them from occurring.

In Lumina Aesthetics our average age of our patients at Health & Aesthetics is 27 years old.

The right age to start Botox depends on your skin:

20sYou want to prevent wrinkles occurring in your early 30s
30sYou’ve started to notice a few wrinkles—particularly crow’s feet and brow lines—and you want to stop them from becoming deep-set
40sYou start to notice deeper lines around your eyes, particularly crow’s feet, forehead and frown lines and upper eyelids.
50sLines between your eyes particularly become more pronounced as changes due to the menopause make your skin drier and more prone to wrinkles.
60sYou want to look fresher, with rejuvenated skin, rather than wanting to appear 30 years younger.

And how about Filler? At what age should you start filler injectables?

If you’re looking to a dermal filler to combat signs of ageing, your mid-20s is often a good time to start. Your body starts to lose bone and collagen around age 26, so it’s a good time to begin maintenance injections. By starting early, you’ll use require less product than if you wait until your mid-50s. Plus, you’ll maintain a natural, fresh appearance over the years instead of seeing a more dramatic change when you’re older.

Dermal fillers have a much broader use though. They can be used at any age to plump up lips, add volume to cheeks, add dimension to chins or increase nose bridges. For these purposes, start dermal fillers whenever you’re ready to boost your confidence!

The bottom line is this: there’s no right age to start injectables. You should start when you’re ready. But as the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So the sooner you start, the easier it will be to maintain a youthful, radiant appearance as you grow older.
